Ben Hur Starts off with the birth of Jesus. Incredible story of how one man's life is affected by Jesus. Based on the book which was inspired by the author's conversation with an atheist on a train in the years following the Civil War. Did Jesus really ever exist? Absolutely!!! We watch this every Christmas, family tradition!
Dave Aside from a couple times you'll need to fast forward, this is a one of those "make a difference" movies, with themes similar to those of "Mr Smith Goes to Washington". Sweet ending.
Fiddler on the Roof All-time great musical!
The Hiding Place Based on the book by Corrie Ten Boom.
Hook, 1991. This is one of our favorite movies. It tells the Peter Pan story from the perspective of a grown-up Peter (Banning) Pan, a father struggling to balance his career with the needs of his family. The
John Williams musical score is absolutely amazing and intensifies the emotions of the film itself: the sense of longing, the loneliness of an orphan, the sense of wonder at things like being able to fly or time travel. Even critics of the film admit that this is probably one of John Williams'
best scores. (I spoke with a music prof from University of Nevada and when I asked him who he'd consider to be the best contemporary composer his answer was: John Williams!) What comes through in the film is a father's commitment to his children, dedication to his wife, and the mystery of those things we don't quite understand. (Could there really be a 'Neverland'?)
The Lord of the Rings Amazing how closely this trilogy followed the books by JRR Tolkien! Sam's the hero. :-) Still waiting and hoping for "The Hobbit" on film.
