Come join us for Debate this Fall! If you are 13 - 18 yrs.old and would like to learn the art of team debate, this class is for you. We will cover the basics of what debate is in a 12 week beginning debate class, Tuesdays, 1 - 3p.m. from Sept. 25 to Dec. 11. Then for those brave souls wishing to put their newly learned skills into practice, we have the opportunity to compete in the
Christian Communicators Northwest Debate League. There are three debate tournaments in Feb., Mar. and April 2008.
Location: The Sept. 25, and Dec. 4 and 11 classes will be held at Suburban Christian Church in Corvallis; the Oct.-Nov. sessions will be at First Baptist Church in Corvallis, coinciding with the other CACHE classes.
Cost will be $15.00 per family for textbook and handouts.
Students should come expecting to learn TONS about organizing your thoughts, internet research, public speaking skills, and the art of effective, polite, respectful discussion with someone of an opposing viewpoint.
Students who wish to compete in the tournaments should also expect two meetings near each tournament time; once beforehand to prepare, and once following the tournament to debrief and retool for the next round. And there is a tournament entry fee which comes out to about $25.00 per student, per tournament. We will work out whatever we can to help each student be able to participate.
Debate is intense, exciting, and richly rewarding for those who dive in and try. Credit could be assigned for Language Arts, Speaking and Writing skills.
